ADHD & Coaching

Everything you need to know about ADHD and coaching. On this page, we show how these two elements can work in harmony to help individuals with ADHD.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a person’s ability to focus, regulate impulses, and manage energy levels. It is characterised by traits such as inattention (difficulty staying focused, following through on tasks), hyperactivity (excessive movement, restlessness), and impulsivity (acting without thinking, difficulty waiting for turns).

ADHD can impact various aspects of life, including academic performance, work, relationships, and daily activities. It is generally diagnosed in childhood, but often missed, especially in older generations. ADHD can persist into adulthood. Managing one's ADHD often includes a combination of behavioural strategies, coaching, therapy, and sometimes medication to help individuals regulate, and improve functioning.

What is ADHD Coaching?

ADHD coaching is a specialised form of coaching designed to support individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in managing their unique challenges and leveraging their strengths. It focuses on practical strategies and personalized support to help clients improve organization, time management, self-regulation, and overall quality of life.

ADHD coaching offers numerous benefits for individuals with ADHD, helping them navigate challenges and unlock their full potential. It helps to build self-awareness, boost confidence, and individuals can learn to set and achieve meaningful goals, create structured routines, and gain a sense of control over their lives. Ultimately, ADHD coaching empowers clients to manage their challenges and thrive in both personal and professional areas.

What distinguishes a certified ADHD coach from the rest is, a certified ADHD coach has a highly specialised training allowing them to view the coaching conversations through an ADHD lens. This unique perspective and extensive knowledge of ADHD is essential when supporting individuals with ADHD.

ADHD Coaches

There are 3 types of ADHD Coaches

  1. Certified ADHD Coach: A Coach who has completed extensive specialised ADHD Coach training.

  2. Coach specialising in ADHD: A certified Coach who has completed educational training on ADHD.

  3. Coach who has an awareness of ADHD: A certified Coach who has done their own research on ADHD, or has previous experience working with ADHD.

Coaching Feedback
“Coaching is like having a personal guide to help you navigate life. Instead of giving advice, a coach asks questions and helps you uncover your own answers. They guide you in setting goals, staying motivated, and breaking challenges into manageable steps. It’s about helping you see things differently, make decisions, and grow along the way."
What ADHD Coaching is Not!

ADHD coaching is also not about simply offering advice or giving quick fixes. Instead, it involves guiding individuals with ADHD to develop their own personalized strategies, tools, and skills to better manage their challenges and enhance overall productivity and well-being. The focus is on empowerment, not on solving all problems for the client.

ADHD coaching is not a form of therapy or a substitute for medical treatment. It doesn’t focus on diagnosing or treating underlying mental health conditions, although it may complement other forms of therapy.

An ethical well trained coach will spend the session helping you figure out for yourself, what is the right way for you. Your coach should want the best for you, according to your own needs and goals. Your coach will help you to learn how to work alongside your brain instead of against it and using your strengths, in turn minimising ADHD specific challenge.

Please Note:

  • Coaches do not have all the answers

  • Coaches are not meant to tell you what to do/give you advice

  • Coaching is not about tips, tricks or hacks
